By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño is in El Salvador, where he has taken up the pro tempore presidency of the Central American Integration System, known as SICA, while also advancing closer ties between Belize and El Salvador.

Although no official announcement of his travel was made beforehand, the Prime Minister was on hand for the official handover. SICA’s pro tempore presidency rotates among member states on a temporary basis, and Belize now assumes that leadership role. At the ceremony, Briceño reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening regional integration and cooperation among Central American nations.

While in the country, the Prime Minister also met with the Vice President of El Salvador, Félix Ulloa. According to an Instagram post, their discussions centered on strengthening cooperation, deepening the partnership between the two nations, and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

The visit comes at a notable moment in relations between Belize and El Salvador. This week, Cabinet announced its approval for Belize to sign, and later ratify, a Partial Scope Agreement with the Government of the Republic of El Salvador. Such agreements typically cover trade in specific goods or sectors, rather than a full free trade arrangement, and are often a step toward expanding economic ties. The agreement is set to be signed on July 2, 2026, in San Salvador.

Taken together, the developments point to a deepening relationship between the two countries and a renewed focus on regional cooperation, with Belize stepping into a leadership role within SICA at the same time.
