By Aaron Humes: The Briceño Administration has officially embarked on its second term, introducing a reshuffled Cabinet that has generated considerable interest among Belizeans. The new appointments were announced over the weekend, with all 26 area representatives being sworn in as either substantive ministers or ministers of state during a ceremony at the Governor General’s residence on Monday.
While the ministries largely retained their previous configurations from the first term, significant personnel changes have reshaped the Cabinet. Among the most notable shifts, Rodwell Ferguson and Dolores Balderamos Garcia were demoted from their ministerial roles to ministers of state, now positioned in the Office of the Prime Minister. Francis Fonseca continues to oversee Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, in addition to Culture, while Oscar Requeña steps in as the new Minister of Education. Dr Louis Zabaneh, formerly the Minister of State in Education, has been reassigned to Constitutional and Indigenous Affairs, Religious Affairs, and Transport.
The Administration also welcomed new faces, with Devin Daly assuming the role of Minister of State in Youth and Sports, and Thea Garcia Ramirez taking over her aunt’s ministry, now designated as Human Development, Family Support, and Gender Affairs.
Prime Minister Briceno reflected on the challenging process of reconfiguring the Cabinet, acknowledging the difficulties of balancing representation from various regions while ensuring a competent leadership team. “To me, one of the most difficult things was finding the right fit for everyone involved,” Briceno stated. “As Prime Minister, it’s my responsibility to make these decisions, and they aren’t made lightly.”
Despite potential rivalries over cabinet placements, the newly appointed ministers largely expressed their appreciation for their assignments. Michel Chebat, the Minister of Public Utilities, Energy, and Logistics, enthusiastically commented on his continued work in these areas, acknowledging that portfolio assignments ultimately reside with the Prime Minister: “I think it’s a good fit for me, and I’m glad to continue the work we started,” he said.
Thea Garcia Ramirez expressed her gratitude for her appointment, stating, “I am humbled, I am honored to have been chosen by the P.M. for this huge responsibility.” She emphasized teamwork, noting her intention to heavily rely on the knowledge and experience of former Minister Balderamos Garcia, while aiming to hit the ground running.
