By Aaron Humes: 23-year-old Brett Mejia, a food vendor of Mile 15, George Price Highway, Hattieville, Belize District, has been remanded on charges of attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm on Kenroy Lanza, 24, his sister’s boyfriend (soon-to-be-ex according to her).

No plea was taken from Mejia and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison in the first instance as the charges are indictable and do not qualify for bail in the first instance. He returns to court on January 6, 2025.

However, his family say their brother was acting in defence of his sister, and she agreed, telling her story to a court reporter for the first time as she claims police refused to listen to her.

“My boyfriend, he mi di drink and he mi wah try rape me and he grab me ina my shirt, I had to release his hand. And I run over to my ma, when I run over to my ma he run behind me with a knife and a machete and wah chop my ma. I mi di try help my ma get the machete and couldn’t get it so I run gahn hail my bredda,” she said in an off-camera interview. “My bredda reach, when my bredda come my bredda mi di try get the knife or the machete but the knife end up turn right round and stab my boy.”

Kenroy Lanza remains hospitalized following the altercation.

Police said they had detained the young woman, aged 19, but she says they accused her of “talking lone foolishness” when she tried to make her report and that nothing she said made sense to them. She says they will seek legal advice and try again to make a report against Lanza, with whom the victim has a young son. She told our reporter that she would leave Lanza, who remains hospitalized, and limit their relationship to providing for his child.

We understand the family has since retained an attorney and will proceed with an official report against Lanza over the incident on November 3.

Brett Mejia turned himself in to police on Wednesday where he was interviewed and gave a caution statement.

According to police, while socializing at the family residence in Hattieville, Lanza allegedly propositioned his partner; he was angered when she refused, which led to the sequence of events that would see him being led to the roadside with an apparent stab wound in the neck.
