By Aaron Humes: Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI) has announced it will stop accepting deliveries from this evening, Wednesday, and close down operations effective Thursday, by mutual agreement with cane farmers and the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB).

Incessant rainfall and waterlogged conditions have made a mess of the cane fields in Corozal and Orange Walk, with the factory at Tower Hill posting unsightly figures for tons of sugar made from tons of cane crushed of 14 to 1.

To date, approximately 16,000 tons of sugar have been made from 243,000 tons of cane ground.

BSI Communications Officer William Neal said both sides have agreed that it will do them no good to continue trying to grind through the situation, but no date for resumption will be agreed until the weather improves – a cold front is expected this weekend.

We’ll have more coming up.
