By Zoila Palma: Belize has confirmed its first-ever case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in humans.
The case was reportedly detected in a farmer from Benque Viejo del Carmen, who is currently receiving medical treatment.
The New World Screwworm is a dangerous parasite caused by the Cochliomyia hominivorax fly. Its larvae infest wounds and feed on living tissue, leading to severe pain, secondary infections, and if untreated, potentially life-threatening complications.
While NWS has long been a threat to livestock in the Americas, human cases are rare and closely monitored by health officials.
This is a developing story.
