By Aaron Humes: The Los Angeles Dodgers have secured back-to-back World Series titles, edging a dramatic seven-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Tonight’s decisive Game 7 ended with a 5-4 victory for the Dodgers in 11 innings, after catcher Will Smith’s solo home run in the top of the 11th inning.
This victory makes the Dodgers the first team since the New York Yankees (1998-2000) to repeat as champions, and the ninth to win the Series by taking games 6 and 7 on the road. In a tense and memorable finale, Will Smith’s blast off Shane Bieber stunned the Rogers Centre crowd and finally swung the momentum in Los Angeles’s favor. In the top of the ninth, second baseman Miguel Rojas had tied the game with a drive to left field, landing in nearly the same spot as the legendary Joe Carter’s game-winning shot in the same ballpark in 1993.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s remarkable relief appearance on zero rest did the rest, as he prevented the Blue Jays from tying the game, stranding the tying run at third in a scoreless bottom of the 11th and rescuing countryman Shohei Ohtani’s blushes after he surrendered a three-run home run. L.A. answered with two sacrifice flies from Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernandez and a Max Muncy home run to set the stage for the late heroics.
