By Aaron Humes: Caye Caulker has spoken and rejected the legalization of marijuana on its island. Members of the ‘No’ campaign, also known as “Hope not Dope” have claimed a resounding victory in the Caye Caulker cannabis referendum.
A total of 857 ballots were cast in today’s referendum, accounting for a 58.94 percent turnout. Of ballots cast, 678 or 79.11 percent voted “No”; 176 or 20.54 percent voted “Yes”; and 3 ballots were rejected.
Church Senator Louis Wade maintained that it is a “moral issue, not a money issue.” He said the four church pastors on the island and other concerned citizens stepped up and organized the campaign to prevent legalization of cannabis on the island.
Other pastors dedicated the victory to God and said the island was full of “God’s people.” They maintain that the island will not lose unity.
Wade said it is time for a National referendum on the issue, but some want another referendum on ensuring Caye Caulker retains more revenue for its use on the island.
