By Zoila Palma: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Cayo District, Breaking Belize News (BBN) has partnered with Santa Elena Primary School to launch the Santa Elena Journalism Club, aimed at nurturing young writers and future journalists.
Through this exciting new program, students will learn the fundamentals of journalism — including ethics, writing styles, and responsible reporting.
They will also gain hands-on experience creating their own articles and videos, which will be published on Breaking Belize News’ Facebook page, website, and mobile app.
BBN’s Zoila Palma is leading the sessions with the students, guiding them through the process of story development, interviewing, and writing. “We hope to inspire other journalists to give of their time and effort to nourish the skills of our youths and to promote good news,” Palma shared.
During the club’s first sessions, students were introduced to the basics of journalism and are now preparing to publish their first article — highlighting school activities and promoting reading and writing among their peers.
The Santa Elena Journalism Club will focus on positive storytelling, featuring top readers, top spellers, cultural and sports day events, outstanding athletes, and young entrepreneurs who are creating crafts or launching their own small businesses.
“This initiative represents a powerful collaboration between media and education to encourage literacy, creativity, and community pride among Belize’s youth,” Palma added.
