By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Breaking Belize News is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our colleague and friend Ruben Morales, who passed away peacefully at 4:30 this afternoon on his own, and was not disconnected.
Ruben was more than a journalist. He was the voice of sports in Belize.
When Ruben joined Breaking Belize News in March 2021, he brought with him decades of experience, an unmatched passion for sports, and a commitment to telling the stories behind the scores. From local football leagues to international competitions, Ruben covered it all with energy, insight, and heart.
Very quickly he established himself as Belize’s most prolific and respected sports writer, highlighting not just the victories but the perseverance, pride, and spirit of Belizean athletes. His work celebrated the talent of this country and made sure our athletes received the recognition they deserved.
BBN Chairman and CEO Hugh O’Brien reflected on Ruben’s journey and how naturally he fit into the newsroom. Having admired Ruben’s love for football and his years covering sports, O’Brien knew exactly who to call when Breaking Belize News decided to launch its sports platform. In February 2021 he reached out to Ruben, and by March 1st Ruben officially joined the BBN team.
Even after turning 65, Ruben continued writing with the same dedication and enthusiasm that defined his career.
While sports was his passion, Ruben also contributed to national coverage including agriculture and business. But it was in sports reporting where he truly shined, capturing the heart of Belize’s sporting culture like few others could.
To those of us who worked with him, Ruben was much more than a colleague.
He was a friend, mentor, and steady presence.
BBN Editor Alexis Milan recalls often running into Ruben in their Mile 8 community, where he was always warm, welcoming, and kind. During a medical emergency in Milan’s family, Ruben was one of the first people to reach out. In an incredible turn of events, Ruben’s daughter Lesly later became the surgeon who performed the life saving emergency surgery for Milan’s significant other. A connection Ruben helped make possible and one the family will never forget.
Ruben leaves behind a legacy not only through his writing but through the lives he touched.
And we will especially remember the lighter moments with him. The laughter, the storytelling, and the unforgettable time we shared together in Caye Caulker, where Ruben’s warmth and humor made those moments special.
His passing leaves a huge void in Belizean sports journalism and in the Breaking Belize News family.
But Ruben Morales will always be remembered for what he gave Belize.
His voice. His passion. His stories.
Rest in peace, Ruben. You will always be part of the BBN family.
