Breaking Belize News in partnership with StemU Foundation honors Dr. Anya Moguel as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) model in Belize

Physician, Palliativist, and Lecturer

Born and raised in San Ignacio, Cayo, Dr. Anya Shaquia Moguel grew up deeply rooted in the values of family, hard work, and community. The eldest daughter of John and Juliet Moguel, and sister to Dr. Ivanya Moguel and Jervis Moguel, she spent her childhood between San Ignacio and San Jose Succotz. Surrounded by the beauty of Belize’s natural landscape, she developed a strong appreciation for life and service—helping her family on the farm and accompanying her father, a tour guide, as he shared the wonders of Belize with visitors.

From an early age, Dr. Moguel felt called to care for others, especially those most in need. Witnessing the challenges faced by patients in her community—particularly those at the end of life—sparked a deep sense of purpose that would later define her career.

Dr. Moguel’s academic journey began close to home at Sacred Heart College and later at Sacred Heart Junior College, where she earned her Associate Degree in Biology, laying the foundation for her future in medicine. She went on to attend Universidad Mesoamericana in Guatemala, where she obtained her Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (M.D.), graduating among the top of her class.

While serving at San Ignacio Community Hospital, a moving encounter with a terminally ill patient—combined with the encouragement of her chief of staff—led her to discover her passion for palliative care. That experience became a turning point in her medical journey.

Today, Dr. Moguel holds a Master of Science in Palliative Care (Summa Cum Laude) from Universidad Galileo in Guatemala and serves as a Lecturer at the University of Belize School of Medicine. Her work integrates clinical practice, teaching, and advocacy, driven by a mission to improve quality of life and promote dignified care for patients and families across Belize.

Beyond her professional commitments, Dr. Moguel actively volunteers with the San Ignacio Cancer Society and dedicates time to providing pro bono education on palliative care for physicians and other medical personnel. She also travels to remote communities to deliver end-of-life care, ensuring that compassion and comfort reach even the most underserved areas.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Moguel finds joy in gardening, traveling across Belize, and cherishing every moment with her husband, Jexon Martinez, and their two-year-old daughter, Alara—who continue to inspire her daily to make a difference through compassion, education, and hope.

Anya carries with her a piece of advice from her uncle that continues to guide her both personally and professionally:

“Be the hardest worker in the room.”

This simple yet powerful phrase reflects the dedication, resilience, and heart that Dr. Moguel brings to every aspect of her life and career.
