By Horace Palacio: You might think a war halfway across the world between Israel and Iran is just another headline. You might think U.S. bombs dropping in the Middle East don’t mean much for a small, peaceful country like Belize. But you’d be wrong.
History has shown us that when global giants clash, smaller nations like ours feel the aftershocks—hard and fast.
Let’s be clear: This isn’t just about missiles in the desert or tanks on foreign soil. It’s about rising fuel prices, shrinking paychecks, and the cost of rice and beans creeping up at your corner shop in Benque, Dangriga, and Belize City.
Iran is a major oil producer. Any disruption in its oil exports—whether from U.S. strikes, Israeli blockades, or Iranian retaliation—sends fuel prices soaring worldwide. Belize doesn’t produce a drop of oil for domestic use. We import everything. That means when oil goes up, Belizeans get burned.
Fuel prices are already flirting with pain thresholds. Expect them to spike. Expect taxi fares, bus tickets, and food transport to follow suit. When fuel rises, your grocery bill does too.
When war breaks out abroad, a quiet war breaks out at home—on your wallet. Inflation is the thief that robs you slowly. One dollar today buys less tomorrow. As imported goods get more expensive, Belizeans will feel the squeeze hardest. Our families, our farmers, our small businesses—none are immune.
We’ve worked hard to position Belize as a haven—safe, beautiful, warm, welcoming. But travelers are nervous right now. The U.S. economy is shaky. Airline prices are jumping. And when people feel uncertain, travel becomes a luxury. Our resorts, tour guides, and restaurants—especially in places like San Pedro, Placencia, and San Ignacio—could feel the chill.
Let’s not kid ourselves. Belize benefits from U.S. attention—security cooperation, grants, student programs, infrastructure support. But if Washington is consumed with a war in the Middle East, guess who gets bumped down the priority list? That’s right: the Caribbean. Central America. Belize.
We’re used to being overlooked. But right now, being forgotten could mean fewer resources to fight crime, less investment in youth programs, and a longer wait for economic recovery.
Investors hate uncertainty. And there’s nothing more uncertain than a potential World War brewing in the Middle East. Belize has become a quiet magnet for real estate deals, eco-tourism projects, and agriculture ventures. But if Wall Street gets nervous, Main Street Belize will feel it.
Fewer deals. Delayed projects. Caution everywhere.
We’re not powerless, but we are exposed. Now is the time for leadership—not just from Belmopan but from every village council, every business, every household.
We need to boost local food production, reduce dependency on foreign fuel, and build a real economic cushion for the most vulnerable Belizeans. And we need to do it before the second wave hits.
Because make no mistake: This war may be 7,000 miles away, but the fallout is heading straight for us.
Let’s not be caught off guard again.
