By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Tiger Sharks are one win away from hoisting the BPBL Toucan Cup after outlasting the EZ Investments Dangriga Dream Ballers in Game 1 of the Finals last Friday. With the series shifting to Dangriga for Game 2 on Friday, September 12, all eyes turn to the Russell ‘Chiste’ Garcia Auditorium, where the Dream Ballers must defend home court to force a decisive Game 3.
San Pedro’s Game 1 victory was built on physicality, rebounding dominance, and a balanced offensive effort led by Jihad Wright’s near triple-double. Despite shooting just 15% from three-point range, the Tiger Sharks controlled the tempo with 61 rebounds and 26 fast break points, stifling Griga’s rhythm and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities.
EZ Investments Dangriga Dream Ballers, powered by Kirk Smith Jr. and Daniel Conorque, showed flashes of brilliance but struggled to convert consistently. Their bench production and perimeter shooting lagged, leaving them trailing for most of the contest.
If San Pedro close out the series in Game 2, Game 3 will be unnecessary. But should Griga rally at home, the Finals will return to the Belize City Civic Center for a winner-take-all game at 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 14.
In that potential Game 3, expect San Pedro to lean again on its depth and defensive pressure, while Griga will need a breakout performance from its supporting cast and improved shooting efficiency to stay in contention. The Tiger Sharks are chasing their first BPBL title since the league’s rebranding, while the Dream Ballers aim to extend their Finals streak and force a dramatic finish.
