By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Premier Basketball League (BPBL) Mayan Cup Finals reach their climax this Saturday, September 13, as the Cayo Western Ballaz host the Belize City Thunderbolts in a winner-takes-all Game 3 at the Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio.
After splitting the first two games by identical three-point margins, both teams enter the final with everything to play for. The Ballaz edged Game 1, 86–83, behind Arik Nicholas and Jamell Harris. The Thunderbolts responded in Game 2 with a gritty 77–74 win at the Civic Center, fueled by Tyrone Hall’s double-double and Victor Evans’ ironman performance.
Belize City’s Game 2 victory showcased their depth and defensive tenacity. Hall posted 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Evans logged all 40 minutes, contributing 16 points, eight boards, and five assists. Glency Lopez controlled the tempo with 15 points and nine assists, and Matthew Young added his second straight double-double.
Bench contributions from Eyan Rene and Luis Sosa Jr. proved decisive, especially in the fourth quarter, where timely threes and hustle plays helped seal the win.
Despite outshooting the Thunderbolts from the field, the Ballaz were undone by 24 turnovers and poor perimeter shooting (7/26 from three). D’von Campbell led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Nicholas and Ciego provided interior strength and scoring.
Cayo will need sharper ball control and better shot selection to claim the Mayan Cup on home court. Their rebounding edge and physicality remain assets, but execution under pressure will be key.
Saturday’s Game 3 promises a packed house and high drama, as the Mayan Cup finds its champions. The Ballaz seek redemption and a title in front of their fans, while the Thunderbolts aim to complete the comeback and lift their first BPBL trophy.
The winner of the Mayan Cup will advance to the Jaguars Cup Final Series against the Toucan Cup champions. San Pedro currently leads that series 1–0 over Dangriga, with Game 2 set for Friday night.
