By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Premier Basketball League’s Mayan Cup Finals tip off tonight as the Western Ballaz host the Belize City Thunderbolts at the Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio. Game 1 of the best-of-three series begins at 9:00 pm, with both clubs vying for a spot in the BPBL Jaguars Cup Final.
The winner will advance to face the Toucan Conference champion—either the San Pedro Tiger Sharks or the EZ Investments Griga Dream Ballers—who begin their own semifinal series Friday night as well. The Jaguars Cup Final will crown Belize’s top club in the 2025 season.
Game 2 heads to the Belize City Civic Center this Sunday, September 7, at 5:00 pm. If needed, a decisive Game 3 returns to San Ignacio on Saturday, September 13.
The Ballaz, top seed in the Mayan Conference, are anchored by BPBL Scoring Champion Arik Nicholas and Sixth Man standout Darnell Oden. Their disciplined defense and playoff-tested core make them a tough matchup on home court.
The Thunderbolts arrive with momentum after sweeping the Belmopan City Kings. Led by league MVP Glency Lopez and Rebounding Champion Matthew Young, Belize City’s squad brings offensive firepower and renewed confidence into the Finals.
With stars on both ends of the floor and a national title within reach, tonight’s opener promises intensity from start to finish.
