The stage is set for the inaugural Belize Professional Basketball League (BPBL) Jaguar Finals, as conference champions San Pedro Tiger Sharks and Cayo Western Ballaz prepare to collide in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday, September 26 at the Belize City Civic Center.
The Tiger Sharks punched their ticket with a dramatic 92–90 win over the EZ Investments Dangriga Dream Ballers in Game 2 of the Toucan Cup Finals, sweeping the series 2–0. Meanwhile, the Ballaz secured the Mayan Cup after edging the Belize City Thunderbolts 80–78 in a nail-biting Game 3 on Saturday night in San Ignacio.
The Jaguar Finals will crown the first-ever champion of the rebranded BPBL.
Tiger Sharks Bring Depth and Experience
San Pedro’s path to the finals was paved by standout performances from Jihad Wright and Francis Arana, who anchored the team through both games. Wright nearly posted a triple-double in Game 1, while Arana’s leadership and court vision proved vital in clutch moments. The Tiger Sharks showed poise under pressure, surviving a late surge from Dangriga in Game 2 to seal the series.
Ballaz Ride Home-Court Heroics
Cayo Western Ballaz earned their spot with grit and precision. In Game 3 of the Mayan Cup Finals, Arik Nicholas delivered the game-winner—a composed two-point layup with just 6.3 seconds left—after Rasheed Reneau had tied the game for the Thunderbolts with a floating jumper at 18.6 seconds. Nicholas finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while D’von Campbell added 23 points and five assists. The Ballaz now carry momentum into the championship series.
With both teams showcasing elite talent, tactical depth, and clutch execution, the Jaguar Finals promise to be a display of Belizean basketball at its highest level. The Tiger Sharks seek to complete their unbeaten playoff run, while the Ballaz aim to bring the title home to San Ignacio.
