By Breaking Belize News Staff: Albert Perez, 36, a sales agent from Belize City, is on remand at Belize Central Prison after being unable to post bail due to an outstanding court debt from 2020. Perez, who is accused of stealing $40 from his girlfriend, was arraigned this morning on a single charge of theft.
The allegations stem from an incident on July 16, 2024, when Perez allegedly took money from his girlfriend’s purse while she was in the bathroom. Perez, who pleaded not guilty, was granted bail of $1,000 with strict conditions, including no contact with the complainant and staying 100 yards away from her.
However, court records revealed Perez owed $1,500 from a 2020 case. The magistrate ordered him to pay $200 of this debt before he could post bail. Unable to make the payment by the end of the day, Perez was remanded to Belize Central Prison. His next court date is set for August 19, 2024.
In her police report, August, a call center agent, stated she found $40 missing from her purse after Perez had taken it. Police found the money in Perez’s right pants pocket and subsequently arrested him at August’s request.
