By Breaking Belize News Staff: Responding to a query by Breaking Belize News (BBN) about purported shortages of bottled beers and sodas at select locations across the country, Bowen & Bowen confirmed that all its production lines are now running as per normal after rolling power outages and a regional shortage of carbon dioxide affected production.

BBN has received numerous reports over the past couple weeks of shortages at certain restaurants, bars and stores; especially in the Cayo District. Bowen & Bowen confirmed to BBN that while bottled beers and stouts may have been in short supply in certain locations; the production canned beer and kegs were not interrupted.

In May, Bowen & Bowen had released a statement noting that rolling power outages which impacted the country had also affected its beverage production. In a statement to BBN, Bowen & Bowen confirmed that companies such as theirs are still being asked by Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) to curtail production in an effort to conserve energy for the national grid.

To further complicate matters, a shortage of CO2 or carbon dioxide, which is used to carbonate soft drinks and beers, is affecting the beverage companies in the region. According to Bowen & Bowen, it is aware of two beverage manufacturers that have closed down in Mexico.

The shortage reportedly stems from a strike at a steelworks plant in Lázaro Cárdenas in southwest Mexico. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of steelwork plants through a process called Hyl Direct Reduction, however, the strike which has lasted since May, has been impacting companies in Mexico including Coca Cola FEMSA and others. CO2 is used by breweries to make drinks like sodas and beer fizzy.
