By Aaron Humes: Residents of San Jose Nuevo Palmar Village in the Orange Walk District are on high alert following an incident involving unexploded ordnance (UXO) that occurred on Saturday, October 4. The Ministry of National Defence and Border Security has released a statement detailing the discovery and urging the community to exercise caution.

According to officials, the UXO identified was a MK1 General Purpose Medium Capacity/Aircraft Bomb, specifically a training bomb armed only with a “spotting charge.” This charge is designed to produce a small explosion that marks the point of impact during training exercises, but thankfully, the effect was minimal, creating a crater measuring approximately three feet wide and two inches deep. One person, welder Jose Valencia, was killed instantly while working to ornament the bomb on the property of former area representative Dave Burgos.

In addition to the initial device, the Belize Defence Force (BDF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team discovered two more UXOs of the same type at the site. These were promptly stabilized and relocated without incident.

The Ministry emphasized that the area has a history as a training ground, suggesting that similar UXOs may still be buried or hidden in the vicinity. Officials are encouraging anyone who comes across a suspected UXO to adhere to strict safety protocols—do not touch or attempt to move the device, and report it immediately to the BDF for safe disarmament.

The BDF’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team serves as the national authority on these matters, and they are prepared to respond to any such reports. Community members can reach the BDF via the provided email or by visiting any BDF base across the country.

For further information, residents are urged to contact the Public Relations Office at the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security at publicrelations@defence.gov.bz.

Reports are that a second “dummy bomb” not related to those in San Jose Palmar was recovered in Orange Walk Town.
