By Breaking Belize News Staff: Biscayne Village resident and sawmill owner George Cecil Bull, 36, is behind bars after being charged with arson, aggravated assault, and harm following allegations that he burned down the home of his common-law wife after threatening to kill her.

The incident unfolded in September, with Bull accused of committing aggravated assault and causing harm to his common-law wife on September 15, 2024. A week later, on September 22, he allegedly set fire to her home in Biscayne Village, destroying the structure and its contents, valued at $49,300.

Bull appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, where he faced the charges but did not enter a plea for the arson count. He pleaded not guilty to the charges of aggravated assault and harm.

Prosecutor Sgt. Duelene Neal objected to bail, citing the severity of the charges and the threat Bull posed to the complainant. The court heard that Bull had previously threatened to kill the woman and burn down her house with her inside it, with the latter threat apparently realized. Concerns about rising domestic violence in Belize were also raised.

Bull denied the allegations in court, claiming that his common-law wife had falsely accused him due to jealousy. He told the court that his belongings, including his passport and clothes, were destroyed in the fire.

Despite Bull’s plea for bail, citing his responsibility to his three children and his business, the Senior Magistrate denied bail due to concerns for the woman’s safety. Bull was remanded to Belize Central Prison until November 18, 2024, with the option to apply for bail at the High Court on September 27, 2024.
