By Aaron Humes: Kenneth Flowers, widely known as “Big Tom,” is confirmed dead after being shot earlier this evening.
The 47-year-old resident of Mopan Street was driving a dark blue Chevy Equinox, and when approaching the corner of Mopan and Mahogany Streets, someone fired several shots in his direction. Kenneth Flowers then drove down Mahogany Street into Sittee Street, where he crashed into another vehicle and collapsed. He was then rushed to the KHMH, where he was pronounced dead at 4:53 p.m.
Flowers was once notorious for his leadership in the Backatown Gang and survived multiple attempts on his life in Belize and later the United States, while being himself accused of being responsible for multiple deaths as well.
One person has been detained, as early reports suggest that Flowers’ shooting death was not the result of gang rivalry but a love-triangle gone wrong.
In recent years, Flowers had made headlines not just for his past affiliation with gang activity but also for his attempts to reform his image and become a voice for peace in the community. Many who knew him spoke highly of his efforts to reach out to at-risk youth and promote non-violence, highlighting a significant shift from his earlier life.
Police investigation continues.
