By Aaron Humes: 1,176 pounds of suspected ‘high-grade’ cannabis has been taken off the streets of Belize, specifically a residence in Lords’ Bank, Belize District, with a staggering estimated street value of $1.6 million.
It is among the biggest busts made by the Belize Police Department likely in history, and tonight the hunt is on for a person of interest who police believe may be linked to it.
This afternoon, Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith cited the Gang Intelligence, Investigation and Interdiction Unit, Anti-Narcotics Unit and K-9 Unit as involved in the joint operation which recovered the drugs in 29 large bags and a nine-millimeter pistol containing twelve live rounds of ammunition from a room in an apartment building.
ASP Smith stated that “The person of interest is someone that has come [on] the police’s radar before, and has been charged with drug trafficking before,” but did not indicate where the person may be from, or whether he or she is the owner of or linked to the owner of the property. No one was present at the time but police believe they will be able to make an arrest, she stated.
The Staff Officer declined answers to other specifics, such as how the drugs got to the property; where it originated from; precisely what led police to that property and whether the scope of the investigation extended from there. The official explanation is that the investigation is ongoing and police are focusing obtaining the evidence they will need to make a charge stick.
