By Breaking Belize News Staff: Ruben Carrido, 38, a Guinnea Grass resident plead guilty in court on Tuesday to stealing a bicycle and was let off with a fine but outstanding fines from a previous charge landed him right back in jail.
Carrido appeared unrepresented in court on Tuesday after he was brought from the Belize Central Prison, where he had been on remand since his arrest in November 2023. He quickly changed his plea of not guilty to guilty and the court imposed a fine of $500 plus $5 cost of court. He was given until March 31 to pay, in default, 4 months in jail.
The bicycle’s owner, a tour guide, reported to police that on November 4, 2023; he left his bicycle, valued at $350, on a rack and went inside Dreamlike Store in Belize City. When he came out, the bike was gone and surveillance footage from the store showed Carrido taking the bike. In court, Carrido said a man who he knew told him he had forgotten the bike and paid him $10 to go and get it, which he did, not knowing it was being stolen.
Carrido was granted bail but was unable to settle an outstanding fine before the court and so was remanded back to prison.
