Benque Viejo Town Council says citizens failed to support Benque Fiesta resulting in losses of almost $60,000

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Benque Viejo Town Council has placed the blame for the $58,000 loss incurred during the Benque Fiesta 2024 on the shoulders of the community and various external factors.

In a Facebook post, the Council attributed the financial shortfall to several issues, including Hurricane Beryl, insufficient community support, delayed community projects, unpaid property taxes and commercial licenses, and refusal to pay garbage collection fees.

The post has sparked outrage and criticism.

Local business owners have also expressed frustration with the Council’s handling of the situation.

In addition, business owners and residents called out the Benque Viejo Mayor saying he is out of touch with the economic realities.

In its Facebook post, the Town Council explained the reasons for the Fiesta’s financial loss saying that despite the hard work and planning, it “resulted in a considerable waste of resources. This situation not only affects local finances, but also damages the image and reputation of our community.”

“First of all, Hurricane Beryl had a lot to do with the loss; also the unexpected bad weather and the BVTC people administration’s support for events was not what was expected. Not supporting events of the administration does not harm the administration, rather it harms the people of Benque for not supporting the events,” the town council said.

“Likewise, property taxes, commercial licenses and garbage collection. Not supporting these late payments and not wanting to pay for their garbage results in the aforementioned consequences,” the council added.

Meanwhile, atleast 1 councilor has taken to social media to indicate that after the fiesta, there was no meeting to discuss the report and it was made public without their knowledge and without being given an opportunity to discuss.
