By Zoila Palma: Residents of Benque Viejo del Carmen have once again come together to preserve a cherished Easter tradition, transforming the town’s streets into vibrant displays of faith and artistry through intricately designed sawdust tapestries.
The annual practice, rooted in religious devotion, draws families, youth groups, and community leaders who collaborate in the days leading up to Easter to create colorful carpets that line procession routes.
From the early hours of the morning, participants of all ages took part in planning, sketching, and executing the designs.
Children and youths played a central role in this year’s effort, contributing both creativity and labor.
The Benque Viejo House of Culture displayed the beautiful tapestries as youth participants, led much of the coloration process, reflecting a strong sense of ownership and pride. The involvement of younger generations was highlighted as key to sustaining the tradition, with residents emphasizing that culture in the hands of children and youths ensures its continuity.
Among those participating was Flor de la Feria Queen Kaylin Chan and her team, who were recognized for turning devotion into a cultural expression.
