By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Benque Viejo del Carmen’s Marimba Los Hijos del West are traveling to Mexico City to perform at the 2024 International Anthropology and History Book Fair (FILAH). According to Benque and San Ignacio & Santa Elena House of Culture/NICH (BHOC) Coordinator Nalleli Yacab, Los Hijos del West will make presentations at FILAH on Thursday and Friday, August 8 and 9.
Yacab said the Benque Marimba Hijos del West is the BHOC’s leading project and, as such, the BHOC is coordinating what they have termed the ‘Cielito Lindo Tour 2024’ to Mexico City with the assistance of the Belize Embassy in Mexico.
“It is with grateful heart that we prepare for our new experience and journey to Mexico City representing Belize in the coming days through our leading Program, Benque Marimba Los Hijos del West, Senior Ensamble for the @Feria Internacional del Libro de Antropologia y Historia @FILAH in Mexico City with guest and featured participation of Belize as country of highlight,” the BHOC said in a social media post on Monday.

Yacab said the members of the Benque Marimba Los Hijos del West, Senior Ensemble are marimba players Emil Hernandez, Jonathan Tun, Zean Santos, Videl Yacab, and Aylin Ayala; bass guitarists Xavi Perez and Luis Angel Quiroz; drummer Leandro Pacheco; güiro player Ronald Toralla; and Musical Director Ian Yacab.
Yacab herself is the Lead Chaperone, while Mrs. Nancy Santos is traveling as the Parent Chaperone.
“We thank our Honorable Francis Fonseca Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade National Institute of Culture and History for logistical support and kind considerations,” BHOC said in the post.
“We are so honored to have been granted this opportunity of a lifetime by the Embassy of Belize in Mexico City under @Ambassador Oscar Arnold who has been very kind and detailed in making this trip possible.
“We pour our heart in every soulful musical beat with great pride at the Foro Artistico for the #35 FILAH.”
The Benque Marimba Los Hijos del West leave Belize on Tuesday and should complete their Cielito Lindo Tour 2024 on Sunday, August 11.
