By Zoila Palma:  Mayor of Benque Viejo del Carmen, Jorge Rosales, says the municipality has seen a significant surge in business activity following the COVID-19 pandemic, with the number of registered businesses more than doubling.

In an exclusive interview with Breaking Belize News (BBN), Mayor Rosales told reporter Zoila Palma that the growth reflects a renewed entrepreneurial spirit among Belizeans and a strong culture of supporting local businesses.

According to the mayor, more residents are choosing to start their own businesses in Benque Viejo del Carmen, contributing to economic growth and job creation within the community.

He credited the boom to resilience developed during the pandemic and a growing preference among consumers to shop local and reinvest in their own town.

Mayor Rosales, who is the only mayor of Benque Viejo del Carmen to have served two consecutive terms, indicated that he may seek a third term in the upcoming municipal elections.

He said continuity in leadership has helped foster a business-friendly environment and strengthen confidence among local entrepreneurs.

Sharing his personal journey, Mayor Rosales said he understands the challenges faced by small business owners, having started his own block factory with just $80.

Through hard work, determination, and reinvesting his earnings, he said that initial investment doubled, then tripled, eventually growing into a successful business venture.

The mayor encouraged Belizeans—especially aspiring entrepreneurs—not to give up in the face of obstacles.

He stressed the importance of consistency, hard work, and commitment, adding that perseverance is key to long-term success.

As mayor, Rosales expressed pride in the many Belizean-owned businesses operating in Benque Viejo del Carmen, describing them as the backbone of the municipality’s economic strength.
