By Zoila Palma: Today, the town councils of Benque Viejo del Carmen in Belize and Melchor de Mencos in Guatemala came together for a joint cleanup of the Mopan River.
Employees from the Benque Viejo del Carmen Town Council and the Municipalidad Melchor de Mencos, Petén worked side by side, successfully removing 80 bags (50 lbs each) and 15 large garbage bags of waste from the river.
The Benque Viejo Town Council and the Municipalidad Melchor de Mencos, Petén reminds those who use the riverbanks for recreation to keep the area clean.
“Let’s keep our rivers clean and green for everyone to enjoy! These vital waterways provide us with clean water, support rich wildlife and remind us that water is life; we all depend on it to survive,” the Benque Viejo Town Council said.
The council expressed gratitude to Saul Lopez and Ricky G. Cunil for coordinating this cleanup campaign and to Herberth Martinez and Chepe de la Rosa for providing refreshments.
