By Zoila Palma: Mayor of Benque Viejo del Carmen, Jorge Rosales, participated in the official launch of a new book by Belizean author David Ruiz, titled “The Lockdown a Countdown – En la tercera Ola del Covid y unos cuentos más.”
The event was recently held at the National Heritage Library in Belmopan.
The Benque Viejo Town Council and Mayor Rosales extended congratulations to Ruiz on his latest literary achievement, recognizing his continued contribution to Belizean literature and culture.
Ruiz, a Belizean author, cultural activist, and educator, is widely known for his folklore-based and historical fiction, often written in Spanish and centered on Western Belize.
His work plays an important role in preserving oral traditions and cultural memory, particularly stories rooted in the history and identity of Benque Viejo del Carmen.
Among his notable publications are Old Benque: Érase una vez en Benque Viejo, Got seif de cuin! and Under the Ya’axche Tree, all of which highlight Belizean folklore and heritage.
His writings are also used in educational settings across the country, contributing to literary development among students.
Beyond his work as an author, Ruiz has been actively involved in cultural preservation efforts, including his role in developing the Benque House of Culture.
He has also contributed to national literary collections such as the If Di Pin Neva Ben, further cementing his place in Belize’s literary landscape.
