By Aaron Humes: Police say they were called to an area on Friday behind the University of Belize gymnasium in Belmopan, where they found a body in an advanced state of decomposition.
From documents located on the body, which was suspended from a tree, it has been provisionally identified as Benancio Coc, who has been missing since May 3, 34 days ago. However, proper identification is pending a post-mortem examination and DNA identity.
This afternoon, staff officer Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith said there was nothing so far to indicate cause of death, whether suicide or murder; however, she noted, the circumstances tend to lean toward the former.
However, family members of Coc want an independent investigation, citing a photograph showing Benancio hanging from what appears to be a new piece of white rope, despite showing longer body hair and facial hair in contrast to his usual well-groomed appearance. They suggest that Coc may not have been killed right away and was possibly held or harmed elsewhere before being placed at the location where he was found.
Anyone with credible information is encouraged to contact police or reach out to the family directly.
