By Zoila Palma: The Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) has announced its participation in the Sustainable Livelihood Project, led by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in partnership with the Cooperative Department and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE). This initiative aims to enhance climate resilience and economic sustainability across Belize.
BELTRAIDE has been allocated BZD 744,500 for Component 2 of the project, focusing on developing nature-based enterprises. The funding will support five community groups with business development skills, technical assistance, and expanded market access for sustainable ventures. The project aims to strengthen Belize’s national climate resilience and empower communities that rely on natural resources.
A key meeting between BELTRAIDE’s Executive Director, Ishmael Quiroz, and IICA’s Representative in Belize, Mauricio Guevara, finalized the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on February 27, 2025.
The project is financed by the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) under its Adaptation Fund Enhanced Direct Access funding window.
“This partnership is a significant step in promoting sustainable development in Belize,” said Ishmael Quiroz. “By supporting climate-resilient businesses, we are enhancing the livelihoods of Belizeans and contributing to the country’s long-term sustainability.”
The collaboration also aims to empower women and youth, strengthening economic sustainability and climate resilience.
