By Zoila Palma: The Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE), in collaboration with the Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT), hosted a Trade Agreement Workshop designed to strengthen stakeholders’ understanding of Belize’s trade performance and the opportunities available through existing international trade agreements. The workshop brought together representatives from the public and private sectors for an interactive session focused on enhancing Belize’s competitiveness in the global marketplace.
The event opened with remarks from BELTRAIDE Executive Director Ishmael Quiroz, who emphasized the importance of collaboration in driving economic growth and expanding trade opportunities for Belizean businesses.
Participants received detailed presentations on several trade agreements and preferential market access arrangements available to Belize, including the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), the CARIFORUM-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement, the CARIFORUM-United Kingdom Economic Partnership Agreement, the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI), CARIBCAN, and a number of bilateral trade agreements.
Throughout the workshop, attendees gained valuable insights into Belize’s priority export products and explored strategies for leveraging trade agreements to access regional and international markets.
Discussions also highlighted Belize’s engagement within the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the role these agreements play in facilitating trade, investment, and economic development. Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with facilitators during an interactive question-and-answer session that addressed practical applications for businesses and organizations.
BELTRAIDE and the DGFT noted that initiatives such as the Trade Agreement Workshop are essential in supporting the growth, competitiveness, and internationalization of Belizean enterprises.
