By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating a shooting in Belmopan City that left a 24-year-old man critically injured on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. on July 16, 2026, in the Maya Mopan area.
Initial investigations revealed that Luis Mario Montejo was standing with three other people in front of a residence when two armed men approached on foot and opened fire on the group.
Montejo sustained gunshot injuries to the upper part of his body, while the other three individuals escaped unharmed. He was transported to the Western Regional Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information that could assist the investigation to contact the nearest police station, the Belmopan Police Formation at 822-2222, 911, or Crime Stoppers at 0-800-922-TIPS (8477).
Authorities said all information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
