Belmopan man loses $300 in fake Loans2Go scam

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating an alleged online loan scam after a Belmopan man transferred $300 to a bank account believing it was part of a legitimate Loans2Go application.

A 27-year-old remote call agent reported that he received an email on September 2 informing him that a $10,000 loan had been approved.

The email instructed him to deposit $300 into an Atlantic Bank account under an individual’s name in order to complete the process.

Because his father-in-law had recently applied for a $10,000 loan, the complainant believed the message was genuine and made the transfer online.

About an hour later, he received another email asking for an additional $500 before the loan could be disbursed.

That request raised suspicion.

The complainant contacted Loans2Go directly and was told that no such application had been received and that the company does not ask customers to transfer money into personal bank accounts.

He then contacted Atlantic Bank in an effort to stop the transaction and was advised to make a police report.

Loans2Go later confirmed to police that the application had been made through a fake Facebook page. The company said the matter was reported to the Financial Intelligence Unit and the fraudulent Facebook page was also reported.

Police obtained copies of the emails and transfer receipt as investigations continue.
