By Breaking Belize News Staff: Elward McKay, a Belmopan resident out on bail for handling stolen goods in a series of burglaries, was slapped with additional charges in connection with the same crime.
McKay appeared in court on Wednesday and was read a charge of handling stolen goods for a gold bracelet that was stolen in the strip of burglaries and pawned at JEC. He was offered bail in the sum of $1,500 plus one surety of the same, which he was able to meet.
He is due back in court on February 27.
McKay was one of four people who were charged in the series of burglaries. First, the four were jointly charged with handling stolen goods concerning a black JVC television set and remote valued at $1,000.
McKay initially claimed to the court that he bought the TV and told police he could take them to where he got it from, and denied that it had been stolen. Nonetheless, he attempted to plead guilty but the court was reluctant to accept the plea. Eventually, he admitted that he knew the TV had been stolen and was proceeds of crime and the guilty plea was accepted.
McKay was fined $1,000 and cost of court and must pay by February 29, 2024, in default six months imprisonment.
