By Aaron Humes: The nation’s capital, Belmopan, recorded the highest inflation rate in February 2025, reaching 4.1 percent, reflecting ongoing economic complexities. Independence Village, meanwhile, was the only locality to experience a decrease in consumer prices, reporting a -1.2 percent change for the month – consumers there actually paid less for items this year than they did last year.

Analysis of the month-over-month inflation rate indicates a slight increase of 0.01 percent. Notably, the ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ category saw a decline of -0.5 percent, largely driven by lower vegetable prices. In contrast, the ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’ category experienced a 0.7 percent increase, attributed to rising home rental costs and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices.

Looking at the year-to-date figures, the inflation rate for the first two months of 2025 stands at 1.9 percent. Overall consumer prices have increased across nearly all major Consumer Price Index (CPI) categories compared to the same period in 2024. The most significant rise was observed in the ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ category, which surged by 2.4 percent due to higher expenses for fresh fruits, bread, bakery items, and meats.

Moreover, substantial price increases were noted in home rentals, LPG, passenger transport services, personal care products, clothing, footwear, domestic services, and restaurant and café services. However, a noteworthy decline was reported in the ‘Information and Communication’ category, which fell by 1.6 percent over the same timeframe.
