By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize returns under the lights Saturday night as Belmopan FC host Napoles FC at the FFB Stadium in the first match of the 2025–2026 Closing Championship. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm, officially opening a new campaign that promises tighter competition, new tactical identities, and a reshuffled field chasing the crown.
Belmopan reached the playoffs of the Opening Championship but couldn’t advance to the final. Napoles had a phenomenal start to last season, but their spark faded and they ultimately missed the playoffs. For both teams, tonight’s matchup offers a chance to reset the narrative from the very first whistle
The capital‑city atmosphere is expected to be lively, with both clubs pushing to establish momentum before the schedule intensifies in February. Coaches on both benches have emphasized defensive discipline and early sharpness, knowing that dropped points in January often haunt teams in April.
The Opening Championship ended just over a month ago, with Verdes FC lifting the trophy after edging Progresso FC 1–0 on aggregate. While the champions do not play this weekend, their presence looms large over the league as every club begins the chase to dethrone them.
This weekend’s action continues on Sunday with two more fixtures: Progresso FC welcome Capital Sport Club (Benque United FC franchise) to the People’s Stadium at 3:30 pm and Port Layola FC host Wagiya SC at the Marion Jones Sports Complex at 4:00 pm.
All three matches mark the official kickoff of the PLB Closing Championship.
