Belize’s wildlife seeks refuge amidst fires and drought

Posted: Wednesday, May 22, 2024. 4:05 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Belize’s wildlife is facing a dire situation as wildfires and a prolonged drought force animals from their natural habitats and into contact with humans, often with tragic consequences.

The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic (BWRC) has reported a surge in heartbreaking incidents, including the death of a mother opossum and her young, attacked by dogs while seeking refuge in a backyard. A howler monkey, displaced by wildfires, also met a tragic end after being attacked by domestic dogs.

“These innocent creatures are caught in a desperate struggle for survival as water sources vanish and wildfires consume their habitats,” the BWRC said in a statement. “They are seeking refuge in our neighborhoods, and they need our help.”

The organization is urging the public to be vigilant and compassionate towards displaced wildlife.

“Please, stay alert and compassionate. Together, we can make a difference and protect these vulnerable animals in their time of need,” the BWRC pleaded.

The BWRC is available to provide assistance and can be reached at 615-5159 for those encountering distressed wildlife.
