By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belizean journalism has earned a place on the regional stage. Channel 7 News Director Jules Vasquez has been nominated for the CMIA-CBU Caribbean Defender of Media Freedom Award, a regional honour recognizing outstanding journalism and contributions to protecting press freedom across the Caribbean.

The award is presented by the Center for Media Integrity of the Americas and the Caribbean Broadcasting Union. Vasquez is nominated alongside distinguished company, with veteran Trinidadian journalist Wesley Gibbings and the Media Institute of the Caribbean also shortlisted for the honour.

In citing Vasquez, the selection committee pointed to his more than three decades of investigative journalism, highlighting his fearless reporting, his commitment to holding those in power accountable, and his resilience in the face of legal challenges, political pressure, and personal attacks.

For Belizean audiences, the citation will ring familiar. Vasquez has been a fixture of the country’s journalism for a generation, known for tough interviews and dogged pursuit of accountability stories, work that has made him one of the most recognizable figures in the national media landscape.

The nomination itself carries weight for Belize, placing the country’s journalism in the regional conversation about press freedom at a time when the role of an independent media has rarely mattered more.

The winner will be announced during the opening ceremony of the 57th Caribbean Broadcasting Union Annual General Assembly on August 18 in Georgetown, Guyana.

Congratulations to Jules Vasquez on the nomination, a recognition of a career spent asking the hard questions, and an honour for Belizean journalism as a whole.
