By Aaron Humes: According to the Statistical Institute of Belize, Belize experienced a notable increase in merchandise imports in September 2025, totaling $251.4 million — a rise of $19.9 million compared to September 2024, when imports were valued at $231.5 million.

The surge was primarily driven by significant increases in ‘Machinery and Transport Equipment,’ which leapt from $58.2 million to $79.9 million, with higher purchases of aircraft, electronic devices, and phone parts. Additionally, ‘Food and Live Animals’ imports rose by $4.7 million, mainly due to increased imports of evaporated milk, baby formula, cereal, and frozen French fries.

Other categories, such as ‘Mineral Fuels and Lubricants’ and ‘Manufactured Goods’, also saw increases, contributing to the overall uptrend. Conversely, some categories declined. ‘Other Manufactures’ decreased by $7.3 million, reflecting lower purchases of measuring equipment, while ‘Crude Materials’ and ‘Beverages and Tobacco’ also saw declines.

On the export front, Belize’s domestic exports increased to $31.0 million — a 4.7 percent rise from $29.6 million in September 2024. The main drivers were higher sales of marine products, especially lobster, which increased by $1.4 million, and cattle, which doubled from $1.1 million to $2.4 million.

However, exports of sugar and bananas declined during the month. Sugar exports fell by $2.3 million, from $6 million to $3.8 million, while banana exports decreased slightly by $0.7 million, from $10 million to $9.3 million, impacted by reduced shipment volumes.
