By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize’s former top diplomat, Alexis Rosado, has been formally indicted in the High Court on a charge of rape. The allegation, first brought in April 2022, stems from a report that Rosado had sexual contact with a minor beginning when the complainant was just 13 years old.
Rosado was initially arraigned in Belmopan Magistrate’s Court, but the case has since been elevated to the High Court, where he was indicted this week. Accompanied by his attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley, Rosado entered a not guilty plea.
According to Bradley, this move is standard for serious criminal charges, which are handled by the High Court rather than the magistrate level. “This is not the Supreme Court,” Bradley clarified outside the courtroom, “but what’s called the High Court, where such indictments are processed and disclosures are exchanged between the prosecution and defense.”
The attorney explained that both sides would now go through disclosure, a process where they review all depositions, including statements, medical reports, and expert testimony that may be presented in court.
Bradley noted that the charge filed includes rape and aggravated sexual assault, which are typically heard at the higher judicial level due to the seriousness of the allegations.
Rosado is expected to return to court on June 24, 2025, for procedural matters. His bail was previously granted in the lower court and was described as a signed bail in the range of $8,000 to $10,000.
Although the complainant is now an adult, the alleged abuse occurred during her time as a minor, and as a result, court proceedings remain closed to the public.
