Belize’s flag rises high as Shyne Barrow receives 2026 Global Ambassador Award at the Caribbean Music Awards Show in Trinidad

By Hugh O’Brien: On Saturday, September 19th, 2026, Belize stands proud as former Music Ambassador and Grammy Award winning recording artist, Shyne Barrow, received the 2026 Global Ambassador Award in Trinidad and Tobago. The award was presented to Shyne in person during the Caribbean Music Awards Show held at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The regional music awards show is normally held in New York and the organization made history on Saturday night by hosting the award ceremony in the Caribbean for the first time.

Being named the 2026 Global Ambassador at the Caribbean Music Award honors Shyne’s rise as an internationally recognized artist who helped bring the sound and influence of Caribbean talent to audiences around the world. It also recognizes his journey from recording artist to political leader and advocate for Belize and the Caribbean.

The honour celebrates both chapters of a life few has bragging rights to. As a Belizean artist, Shyne made his mark on the global music industry at the turn of the millennium with a distinctive voice and presence that helped define an era, bringing the sound and influence of Caribbean talent to audiences around the world from the biggest stages in hip hop.

Then came the second act. Years later, Shyne carried that influence into public service, going on to serve as Party Leader of the United Democratic Party, Leader of the Opposition in House of Representatives and, as the noted by the awards organization, using his platform to advocate for Belize and its people.

In expressing his gratitude Shyne said “While my talents have been recognized by the Grammy’s and the American Music Awards, nothing compares to the recognition of my Caribbean sisters and brothers. As a son of Belize and child of the Caribbean, the foundation of my Music career is rooted in rhythms of the Land of the Free by the Carib Sea.”

“Initially they called me Shabba due to my heavy baritone and ability to recite every song from the great Shabba Ranks line for line. As an artist I aspired to be like Shabba, Super Cat, Bounty Killa, Beanieman and Buju Banton….but as a human being I wanted to be like Bob Marley. His songs saved my life! They gave me hope, calm, love and peace in world of constant war in Brooklyn Vietnam.” (“Brooklyn Vietnam” is a metaphorical term used by Shyne and other rappers to describe the rough, dangerous environment of Brooklyn, New York, during the crack epidemic and crime wave of the 1980s and 90s”.

According to Shyne, history shows that he always took Belize and the Caribbean with him, in his music and his interviews. “I live to do for Belize what Bob Marley did for Jamaica”, he posted on social media.

Shyne’s musical journey took off in 2000 when he released his platinum-certified self-titled debut album, followed by the gold-certified “Godfather Buried Alive” in 2004 in which he said “My dream came true while I was living a nightmare, when I was able to do a song, Quasi OG, with my all time hero Bob Marley and the Wailers.” Shyne has also worked as a performer, writer and producer with major artists including Usher, Lil Wayne and The Notorious B.I.G.

This special regional recognition comes as Shyne continues his return to the stage in celebration of the hip-hop and reggae’s golden eras with his “2622 LGND” tour, featuring reggae icon Barrington Levy, rap legend Lil’ Cease and Belizean artists Stig Da Artist and DJ Rampage.

And in reflecting on his life, including time spent in Brooklyn and incarcerated, Shyne said that this is “testament that the sun rises after the long night of suffering”.

For Belize, the recognition lands as another remarkable international spotlights on the Jewel, and it could not have come at a better time, almost on the eve of our Independence day celebrations on Monday, September 21.

As we celebrate our 45th year of Independence, let’s celebrate a son of the soil whose name has travelled as far as any Belizean’s ever has. From the record booths of New York to the floor of the National Assembly, and now to a regional stage built to honour.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) joins Belizeans in congratulating Shyne on being named the 2026 Global Ambassador at the Caribbean Music Awards.

We also extend congratulations to the other Honorees and Nominees, including Calypso Rose who received the Elite Calypso Honor, recognizing her six-decade career and Jamaican dancehall artiste Patra, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her influence in dancehall and reggae.
