By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Women’s National Team forward Elva Nunes continues to make waves on the international stage, earning Freshman of the Year honours for Women’s Football in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA), NJCAA Region 7, 2024. The rising star, currently representing Motlow State Community College, was also recognized as the institution’s Female Breakout Player of the Year.

A Season of Excellence

Nunes’ outstanding performances throughout the season cemented her reputation as one of the most promising talents in collegiate soccer. Her technical skill, speed, and finishing ability helped propel Motlow State to a fourth consecutive NJCAA Region 7 championship, earning her individual recognition at both the conference and school levels.

In recognition of her achievements, Nunes and her teammates received championship rings on April 25, 2025, at a special ceremony in Tullahoma, Tennessee, celebrating their fourth consecutive TCCAA/NJCAA Region 7 title. Nunes also received a glass plaque for Breakout Player of the Year at the Motlow State Athletic Banquet.

She was further honoured with a wooden plaque and certificates as Freshman of the Year, highlighting her exceptional contributions to the Motlow team and the TCCAA.

Her success in the United States follows a stellar stint with the Belize Women’s National Team, where she has consistently been a key contributor in international tournaments.

Nunes also scored 18 goals in her freshman season.

Family Legacy in Belizean Football

Nunes’ rise comes as no surprise given her football pedigree—she is the daughter of Jorge Nunes, who was named Best Coach of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2024-2025 Opening Championship as head coach of the San Pedro Pirates.

Looking Ahead

As she continues her collegiate career, Elva Nunes is poised for greater success, with hopes of further developing her skills and making an even bigger impact on both the NJCAA and international stage.

Her accomplishments certainly serve as inspiration for young Belizean athletes striving to make a name for themselves abroad.
