Belize’s efforts in restricting spread of New World Screwworm recognized regionally

By Zoila Palma: Belize detected the first case of New World Screwworm in the Toledo district in late December 2024.

Since then and led by the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, OIRSA, IICA, BLPA, farmers and others, Belize has been very successful in restricting the spread of the New World Screwworm only to the Toledo district.

Belize’s effort so far is recognized as the best in the Central American region.

“We were the last country to have been affected by the screwworm. Even Mexico says we are no. 2 in the screwworm efforts, after Mexico of course,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry thanked the dedicated staff of BAHA, MAFSE, OIRSA, IICA, BLPA as well as the village leaders, cattle farmers, cattle transporters and the general community for paying keen attention, getting educated and respecting the inspection and quarantine protocols instituted by BAHA.
