By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s Derrick Chavarria lined up with the world’s best in the Men’s Under-23 Road Race at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships on Friday, September 26, in Kigali, Rwanda. Though Chavarria did not finish the grueling 164.6-kilometer course, his presence marked a proud moment for Belizean cycling on the international stage.
The race, contested at high altitude and under warm East African skies, saw 120 young riders from across the globe take on the demanding circuit through Kigali’s rolling terrain. Chavarria, wearing bib number 84, was among the many who did not complete the course, joining over 60 riders who registered a DNF (Did Not Finish) in what proved to be one of the most attritional editions of the junior race in recent years.
Italy’s Lorenzo Mark Finn claimed the world title in a time of 3:57:27, averaging an impressive 41.592 km/h. He was followed by Jan Huber of Switzerland (+31 seconds) and Marco Schrettl of Austria (+1:13), rounding out the podium.
Keith Enwright Jr also competed on Friday in the Junior Road Race at the UCI World Championships but didn’t finish.
Jyven Gonzalez will compete in the Men’s Elite Road Race on Sunday.
Despite the result, Chavarria’s participation, his second in a World Championship, is a milestone for Belizean cycling, which continues to build its presence in international competition. His qualification and attendance reflect the growing ambition of the Cycling Federation of Belize and the resilience of its athletes.
The UCI Road World Championships, held from September 21–28, bring together elite and junior cyclists from around the world. For Belize, Chavarria’s ride in Kigali is a reminder that the road to global recognition begins with representation, grit, and the courage to compete.
