By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s cacao sector, through the Toledo Cacao Growers Association and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE), is participating in a regional meeting hosted by SICACAO in El Salvador on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 5-6.

SICACAO is a committee of eight Central American countries, including Belize and the Dominican Republic, that are part of SICA, the Central American Integration System.

SICA aims to enhance the cacao industry in the region through various strategies.

The SICACAO meeting’s goal is to create a plan of action for each country based on the Regional Cacao Plan 2024-2027. During the meeting, the participants will share their current situation in terms of cacao exports and imports and their impact on foreign exchange earnings.

The meeting will launch the Regional Cacao Strategy Plan for 2024 – 2027.

According to MAFSE, Central America produces more than 12 thousand metric tons of cacao per year, covering 21 thousand hectares of land. This accounts for 1.44% of the total production in the Americas, with over 25,000 producers involved. Women make up 30% of these producers, and the average yield is 0.30 metric tons per hectare.
