Belize’s academic community mourns passing of Dr. Sylvia Cattouse

By Zoila Palma:  Belize’s academic and business communities are mourning the passing of Dr. Sylvia Cattouse, a respected educator and business professional.

Tributes have been pouring in from colleagues, former students, and institutions across the country, including Galen University, where she served as Dean of the Faculty of Business and Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Cattouse was widely recognized for her contributions to higher education and national development in Belize.

She held a Master of Business Administration in International Business and International Marketing from University of California, Los Angeles and a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership and Higher Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

Over more than two decades, she lectured at the graduate and undergraduate levels at institutions including University of Belize, University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, University of the West Indies Open Campus, and Galen University.

Before joining Galen University, Dr. Cattouse held several senior leadership positions at the University of Belize, including dean of enterprise development, dean of administration, interim vice president of finance, and chair of the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences. She also played a key role in Belize’s economic development as the founding director of the Belize Export and Investment Promotion Unit, a predecessor to BELTRAIDE.

In December 2021, she was appointed to Belize’s National Trade Negotiating Commission.

Beyond academia and business, Dr. Cattouse was a longtime advocate for women’s empowerment and volunteerism. She served multiple terms on Belize’s National Women’s Commission, contributing to the development of the National Gender-Based Violence Action Plan and the National Gender Policy.

She was also an active Rotarian and worked on projects aimed at supporting young women entrepreneurs.
