By Zoila Palma: A wave of public support has erupted on social media for Andrew Munnings, the young businessman and owner of Munnings Funeral Services, who was remanded over outstanding tax payments.
Posts across Facebook and other platforms have painted Munnings as a community pillar, citing his assistance to students, the homeless, fire victims, and hurricane survivors.
Many users expressed frustration, arguing that his case could have been resolved without imprisonment.
“It’s unfortunate to see a trying Black man in handcuffs for something that could’ve been resolved,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “Our system is just designed to hold you down. The big rich get the breaks, but the small man gets squeezed.”
Former Commissioner of Police and current CEO in the Ministry of Transport, Chester Williams, also weighed in on Facebook, calling Munnings a respected figure and role model.
“I sympathize with my friend Andrew Munnings for the situation he finds himself in. I must say that as business people we cannot run away from paying tax. I don’t know what went wrong with my friend that he is now caught up in this situation. However, I must say that he is a well-respected and law-abiding person who is looked upon by many youths as a role model. I do not know him as someone who would defy any law or rule,” Williams wrote.
He went on to announce efforts to raise funds to help Munnings: “I have spoken to my friend El Toxico and asked him to spearhead a fundraiser to assist this outstanding Belizean youth out of this situation. I have offered to give the first contribution of $100.00. Said Perdomo, Derick Garbutt, and all others who would like to assist kindly touch base with El Toxico. Thanks, together let’s do what we can to get our brother out of this situation.”
The campaign, which is quickly gaining traction online, is now rallying Belizeans to unite in support of Munnings.
