Belizeans pay more for chicken, vegetables, sugar and fruit as food prices keep rising!

By Zoila Palma: Belizean households continued to face higher grocery bills in September, as food and non-alcoholic beverage prices increased by 4.3 percent compared to September 2025, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The SIB’s latest Consumer Price Index report indicates that prices within the food subcategory rose by an average of 4.6 percent.

Among the products recording increases were poultry, which became 5.9 percent more expensive, and vegetables, including onions, sweet peppers, habanero peppers and cilantro, which rose by an average of 5.0 percent.

Sugar recorded one of the most notable increases, with white and brown sugar prices rising by 18.0 percent. Fruit prices increased by 10.6 percent, while bread and bakery products rose by 1.8 percent compared to the same period last year.

Non-alcoholic beverages also became more expensive, recording a 3.0 percent increase. The report attributed this largely to higher prices for instant coffee, which rose by 13.5 percent, and fruit and vegetable juices, which increased by 4.8 percent.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages were among the three main categories driving Belize’s overall annual inflation rate of 4.7 percent in September 2026.
