By Aaron Humes: A series of disturbing events at separate cemeteries in Corozal Town have left the local community in shock. 24 hours after the funeral services for two victims of violent cartel activity, their final resting places were desecrated, raising concerns over safety and respect for the deceased.

Michael Whittaker, one of the men brutally killed by Mexican cartels, was laid to rest yesterday, Wednesday. However, reports emerged this morning that his grave had been disturbed, and the head from his casket had allegedly been removed.

In a similar vein, the grave of Aaron Tun, another victim of cartel violence, was not spared. Following his funeral on Tuesday night, reports indicate that someone approached his tomb, bored a hole into it, attempting to remove the body, then apparently doused it with gasoline, and set it ablaze.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams briefly commented to reporters this morning, “Obviously there is someone who is trying to send a message. I don’t know how dead they want these men to be dead, but it is something we are looking at.”

Whittaker and Tun’s bodies were among five found in southern Quintana Roo over the weekend in a village near Chetumal, days after the body of Raheem Usher was found near the border, although police have not linked the latter death to drug cartel activity.
