Belizeans feel pressure as Fuel, Food and Electricity costs continue to rise

By Zoila Palma:  Belizeans are facing increasing financial pressure as the cost of essential goods and services continues to climb, with fuel, food and electricity prices driving inflation higher across the country.

According to the Statistical Institute of Belize’s (SIB) latest Consumer Price Index survey, the national inflation rate reached 2.9 percent in April 2026, reflecting higher living costs for households already struggling to balance monthly expenses.

SIB noted that transport, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and housing-related expenses were the primary contributors to inflation, accounting for more than three-fourths of the overall increase in consumer prices compared to April 2025.

Food prices continued to rise, placing additional strain on family budgets.

The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages category increased by 2.6 percent, fueled by higher costs for meats, sugar and fresh fruits.

Pork, beef and poultry prices rose by 3.9 percent, while sugar recorded a steep 16.1 percent increase. Fresh produce, including limes and avocados, became more expensive, while non-alcoholic beverages such as instant coffee, juices, purified water and soft drinks also saw price hikes.

In addition, housing and utility expenses added further pressure on consumers, with the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels category increasing by 2.0 percent.

The SIB said this rise was mainly due to higher electricity tariffs introduced earlier this year and increased liquefied petroleum gas prices.

As the cost of transportation, groceries and household utilities continues to rise, many Belizean families are finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with the growing cost of living.
